Our History

Dean Baptist Church has a long and rich history in Tyler, Texas. Our story began in 1854 when a small group of Baptists settled near Butler Creek and organized a church called Enon Baptist Church. The group disbanded shortly after, and another congregation formed in 1857, called Indian Creek Church. This church saw periods of growth, including sending out members as missionaries. However, due to the American Civil War and other pressures, the church disbanded yet again in 1866.

The congregation began to gather again in 1872, with the help of M.J. Dean, who built the first meeting house. Dean Baptist Church was officially organized on June 8, 1872, with nine charter members, and by the end of the first year, it had grown to 48 members. Tyler’s First Baptist Church helped by donating hymn books, a pulpit Bible, and a chandelier.

It became a founding member of the Smith County Baptist Association in 1898, contributing to local mission work alongside the other three members: First Baptist Tyler, Noonday Baptist Church, and Calvary Baptist Church.

By the 20th century, Dean Baptist Church became known for its strong missionary spirit. In the 1920s, a young 19-year-old pastor named Underwood led the church into a period of growth and missionary activity. The church continued to serve locally and globally, including supporting soldiers during World War II. In 1957, the church built the current sanctuary, marking its growth and influence in the community.

Over the years, the people of Dean Baptist Church have faced many challenges, including droughts and civil wars. However, God has continued to be worshipped in the Dean community amidst hardship. Our memorial park is full of individual life stories, and each one plays a part in the story of the Dean Community.

Today, Dean Baptist Church continues to be a vital part of the local community, carrying on the mission that began over 150 years ago, all while embracing the future with faith and perseverance.

The Dean Community surrounding our church hasn’t changed much in 150 years, but the spirit of God is alive here.

What will you add to the Dean story? Join us this Sunday at 11AM.
